What can I study with a Diploma pass? (South Africa)

A Diploma pass is a Matric pass level that can allow you to apply for diplomas at universities of technology and some universities — but admission depends on your APS and specific programme requirements.

Quick facts (so you understand it fast)

With a Diploma pass, you may be able to apply for:

  • Diplomas (often 3 years) at universities of technology
  • Some university diplomas (depending on the institution)
  • Higher certificates (usually easier entry requirements)
  • Some bridging or extended programmes (where offered)

A Diploma pass does not automatically guarantee a place — programmes can be competitive.

Minimum requirements for a Diploma pass

In general, a Diploma pass requires:

  • Home Language: 40% or more
  • Three other subjects (excluding LO): 40% or more
  • Two other subjects: 30% or more
  • You must pass at least 6 of 7 subjects

Universities also check your APS and required subjects.

Examples of diploma fields you can study

Here are common diploma areas (examples):

Business & Commerce

  • Financial Accounting
  • Human Resource Management
  • Marketing
  • Management / Business Management
  • Public Management

IT & Tech

  • Information Technology
  • Software Development (some institutions)
  • Networking / Systems Support

Engineering (often requires Maths + Physical Sciences)

  • Electrical Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Civil Engineering

Many engineering diplomas require Mathematics (not Math Lit) and Physical Sciences.

Health & Community Services

  • Environmental Health (varies)
  • Emergency Medical Care pathways (often strict requirements)
  • Public health-related diplomas (varies)

Hospitality & Tourism

  • Hospitality Management
  • Tourism Management

Creative / Design

  • Graphic Design
  • Fashion Design (where offered)
  • Multimedia / Digital design (varies)

The most important thing: APS + required subjects

Two students can both have a Diploma pass, but only one qualifies for a specific programme because of:

  • APS score
  • Maths vs Maths Lit
  • Physical Sciences / Life Sciences requirements
  • Language requirements

Best next step: calculate your APS

Try the APS Calculator to estimate your APS and see:

What if your APS is too low?

If you don’t qualify for the diploma you want, consider:

  • A Higher Certificate first, then progress to a Diploma (where pathways exist)
  • Rewriting specific subjects to improve APS
  • TVET college programmes (great practical routes)
